January 2 The "Great Eights"
The following are opinions based on holiday tournament performances.
GREAT EIGHT TEAMS
- Orlando Olympia - Gave the state a big boost by winning the inaugural McDonald’s Tampa Bay Hoops Classic.
- Tampa Berkeley Prep - Shocked the basketball community by reaching the finals of the Kingdom of the Sun tournament and coming within a buzzer beater of winning it.
- Miami Monsignor Pace - 2&2 at the City of Palms and a fourth place finish at the Beach Ball in South Carolina are pretty good showings.
- Lakeland Kathleen - Had a chance for the top spot by defeating nationally ranked #7 Norcross at the ASIC but then went 0-2 at the Kingdom.
- Dr. Phillips - took a watered-down Great Florida Shootout but did so in fairly impressive fashion.
- St. Petersburg Lakewood - Third place in the Kingdom is a good showing.
- Orlando Christian Prep - Consolation champs of the ASIC did not play in the winners bracket.
- Clearwater - Fifth place finish at the Kingdom and the game they lost they were without Luke Loucks.
GREAT EIGHT PLAYERS
- Kenny Boynton, American Heritage - owns two tournament scoring records (CoP and Tampa)
- Kevin Foster, Lakeland Kathleen - played extremely well on the national stage at the ASIC
- Martell Buie, Orlando Olympia - named MVP of the Tampa event.
- Ray Shipman, Miami Monsignor Pace - scored a bunch for Pace in both the City of Palms and Beach Ball
- Keith Clanton, Orlando Christian Prep - had breakout tournament in front of national scouts at the ASIC
- Zak Kazanski, Tampa Berkeley Prep - He wasn’t named to the Kingdom all-tourney team and teammate Austin Suarez won Mr Hustle award, but I thought “Kaz” was the team’s most vital player.
- Emari Bailey, Arlington Country Day - Averaged over 20 points a game at the Beach Ball event.
- Justin Watkins, Dr. Phillips - named MVP of the Great Florida Shootout.
